K-12: Successful Student Transitions Leading To Graduation
Arizona’s education system is an interconnected continuum that spans Early Learning, K-12 and Postsecondary education. Each stage is critically important, building upon the one before and contributing to long-term student success. The better the continuum is aligned with respect to curriculum, standards and support for successful student transitions, the more likely we are to have graduates who are prepared to compete, contribute and succeed in the 21st Century.

- Only 24% of Arizona 4th and 8th graders demonstrate proficiency in reading, and only 30% demonstrate proficiency in math.
- 3 out of 10 Arizona students will not graduate from high school.
- Arizona ranks 49th in per student investment in K-12 education.
- Less than half of our public high school graduates qualify academically to enroll in public universities.
Kindergarten through grade 12 (K-12) represents the second and largest stage of the education continuum. Currently, Arizona has more than one million K-12 students attending 2,370 public and private schools. Once students successfully transition from Early Learning into the K-12 system, they are required to meet state established standards for academic performance. Arizona students in grades 9 -12 are also required to complete an Education and Career Action Plan (ECAP). The Plan helps students, parents and educators plan coursework and postsecondary pathways for every Arizona student.
Arizona’s K-12 public education system is overseen by the Arizona Department of Education, which is managed by publicly-elected Superintendent Tom Horne and the State Board of Education. In addition, the Arizona School Board Association and Arizona State Board for Charter Schools provide additional support and oversight to K-12 education.
Taxpayer dollars, and individual and community donations fund K-12 public education while private educational institutions receive their funding from individuals, businesses and organizations.
